Polycarbonate, an alternative to windows Polycarbonate, an alternative to windows
Used both for housing buildings and for industrial and commercial spaces, polycarbonate became a solution intensively employed by construction entrepreneurs/constructors. Lexan is one of the best known brands on the profile market. For the last 25 years, the high performance properties of Lexan made out of it a product facing any comparison regarding transparency, impact resilience on impact, at high temperatures and shocks.

GE and Lexan plates’ range of products are extruded directly from the polycarbonate resins providing significant advantages in comparison with other materials regarding the material weight, excellent fireproof and thermal properties. Lexan plates show enhanced shocks resilience and against vandalism gestures.
For example, Lexan Excell D shows transparent polycarbonate plates with UV protection on both sides, and showing excellent resilience against impacts and bad weather factors. The plates are cold-bent, which makes them perfect to be used for roofs building. They can be also thermoformed while maintaining their UV protection. The plates are 10 years guaranteed against yellowing effect, loosing transparency and breaking.

The Lexan Excell D plates are solid, transparent, UV protected on both sides, thus providing a unique combination of exceptional features: robustness, transparency, litheness, suppleness, resistance to heat, longevity and safety. These ones can be thermoformed or forging/shrinking-bent or, in some cases, can be cold-bent or cold worked. The polycarbonate robustness allows the use of all cutting, piercing and milling techniques. It can be assembled through gluing, self-fillet screws, bolts, screws or even bails. As it shows excellent mechanical features, the polycarbonate can be used through very thin plates.

One of the novelties in the fields is represented by Lexan Thermonuclear Easyclean, a multi-layer cellular polycarbonate which confers an enhanced resilience against the negative UV effects. This product shows on one of its surface a hydrophobic layer which diminishes the tension on the plates’ surface. As a consequence of this special treatment, larger rain drops will form on the surface alleviating the dust washing out of the plates.

According to Geplast, the Lexan importer, the Lexan Thermoclear Easyclean plates are available in 2,3,4,5 and 6 depth walls structures, providing different range of thermal insulation.

Lexan Thermoclear
Lexan Thermoclear is a cellular multilayer polycarbonate resilient to impact and which ensure thermal energy savings. It is an ideal material both for new transparent coatings and for replacing the old ones allowing a wide range of applications from greenhouses, luminaries, or completed arches to commercial centers or sports arenas (stadiums).

The Lexan Thermoclear plates are available in 2,3,4,5 and 6 depth plates providing different range of thermal insulation. The K value varies form 3.5 for a Thermonuclear plate of 6.6 mm depth with 2 walls and 1.5 for the unique 6 walls Lexan Thermonuclear.

Function of different depths, the Lexan Thermoclear types of plates allow a light transmission between 44% and 82%, the opal plates encompassing values varying from 24% up to 58%.
Also, Lexan Thermoclear plates offer extraordinary impact resilience – they do not break, loosen at sudden temperature variations down to -40 C and they are not getting soft at high temperatures of up to +120 C.
These types of products do not spread flames and blow out by themselves; the 10mm Lexan Thermoclear 2 walls plate represents a typical example of fireproofness.
Moreover, Lexan Thermoclear plates are very light, their weight reaching only 1,300 mg/sqm for a 25 mm with 6 walls plate. This feature is very important for transportation and manipulation but especially as it allows the plates’ mounting on as light and simple structures as possible.
The Lexan Thermoclear plates are very easy to cut, processed and commissioned, these ones being use for plain or curve surfaces through cold pressing. The hereby product can be commissioned on plain/smooth surfaces or cold-bent for a minimum range of the plate depth multiplied by up to 175 times and it can be easily cut and pierced with conventional tools and instruments. During mounting process, the specialists recommend the removing of protection folia on a 50m length against the edges to allow an easier removal after the plate commissioning/installation/mounting. As a matter of fact, one recommends removal of protection folia 14 days after plate’s installation/commissioning. For Lexan Thermoclear plate a number of 6 different plates structures in a wide rage of dimensions, with standard length of 980, 1,050, 1,200 and 2,100 mm while the standard colours are transparent, opal white and sun bronze
